In rat striatal slices, it shields methionine enkephalin from degradation and binds low-dose opioid peptides to generate analgesia, and it also blocks brain aminopeptidase activity in both in vitro and in vivo settings. Its greater resistance to proteolysis compared with the parent pseudodipeptide may account for this prolonged analgesic effect.
