ErbB2 works as a receptor that, upon ligand binding activates downstream signalling pathways such as the MAPK and PI3K\/AKT pathways, promoting cell proliferation and survival. The activation of ErbB2 leads to enhanced cell growth and survival, making it critical in normal cellular functions and in the pathogenesis of cancer. The herstatin mRNA is expressed in normal human fetal kidney and liver, but is at reduced levels relative to p185HER-2 mRNA in carcinoma cells that contain an amplified HER-2 gene.
