Nonactin

Nonactin, also known as Polynactin or Werramycin A, is a cyclic ionophore with high selectivity for ammonium and potassium ions. While primarily studied for its antimicrobial properties against gram-positive bacteria, its ion transport capabilities have implications in neuroscience. Ionophores like Nonactin can influence neuronal excitability and mitochondrial function, both of which are critical in neurodegenerative disease mechanisms. Although not widely cited in neurodegeneration, its utility in studying ion homeostasis and membrane potential dynamics makes it a valuable compound in neurophysiological research.
