TEMPO (2,2,6,6-Tetramethylpiperidine 1-oxyl) is a stable nitroxide radical widely used as a spin label and redox probe in biological systems. In neuroscience, TEMPO has been explored for its antioxidant properties and ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species. Its membrane-permeable nature allows it to modulate oxidative stress in neuronal cells, potentially protecting against neurodegeneration. TEMPO derivatives have also been investigated for their role in reducing mitochondrial dysfunction and inflammation, key contributors to neurodegenerative pathology.
