Key elements and design rationale

  • Target: EGF — Pro-epidermal growth factor
  • Antibody format: Host: Rabbit; Clonality: Polyclonal; Isotype: Rabbit IgG
  • Species reactivity: Mouse
  • Molecular weight guidance: Observed: 40 kDa; Calculated: 133072 MW

Biological background

Protein function (datasheet): EGF stimulates the growth of various epidermal and epithelial tissues in vivo and in vitro and of some fibroblasts in cell culture. Magnesiotropic hormone that stimulates magnesium reabsorption in the renal distal convoluted tubule via engagement of EGFR and activation of the magnesium channel TRPM6 (By similarity). .

Scientific background (datasheet): Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is a growth factor that plays an important role in the regulation of cell growth, proliferation and differentiation by binding to its receptor EGFR. EGF locus is mapped to 4q21-4qter. Human EGF is a 6045-Da protein with 53 amino acid residues and three intramolecular disulfide bones. EGF results in cellular proliferation, differentiation, and survival while plays an important physiological role in the maintenance of oro-esophageal and gastric tissue integrity.

Cellular localization (datasheet): Membrane; Single-pass type I membrane protein.

Tissue details (datasheet): Expressed on activated B-cells.

Sequence similarities (datasheet): Contains 9 EGF-like domains.

Research relevance and current trends

  • Commonly studied in contexts related to Cancer,Cell Biology,Cell Cycle,Cell Differentiation,Growth Factors,Growth Factors/Hormones,Signal Transduction.
  • Supports comparative expression analysis across conditions, genotypes, or treatments when paired with appropriate controls.
  • Useful for confirming target presence and subcellular distribution using orthogonal readouts (e.g., microscopy vs. immunoblotting).

Common research applications

  • Western blot (WB): Compare relative target abundance and apparent size/isoforms across samples; interpret bands in light of expected MW and potential PTMs.
  • ELISA: Measure target abundance in compatible matrices using a standard-curve readout; ensure dilution linearity and appropriate controls.
  • Immunohistochemistry (IHC): Assess tissue distribution and cell-type patterns; interpret staining with appropriate negative controls and antigen context.
  • Flow cytometry: Quantify target-positive populations in single-cell suspensions; pair with viability and isotype/FMO controls conceptually.

Notes for experimental interpretation

  • Consider isoforms, post-translational modifications, and processing that can shift apparent molecular weight or localization.
  • Cross-reactivity (datasheet): No cross-reactivity with other proteins
  • Use appropriate positive and negative controls (e.g., KO/KD, blocking peptide, or isotype controls) to support specificity interpretation.

As a polyclonal antibody, this reagent may recognize multiple epitopes on the target, which can improve detection robustness but may require careful specificity controls.

We ordered your anti-EGF antibody for IHC on kidney last year. I am using mouse, and We are going to use the antibody for WB next. My lab would like examining kidney as well as colon in our next experiment. Could give a recommendation on which antibody would work the best for WB?
I have checked the website and datasheets of our anti-EGF antibody and it seems that PA1398 has been tested on mouse in both IHC and WB. Thus PA1398 should work for your application. Our Boster satisfaction guarantee will cover this product for WB in mouse even if the specific tissue type has not been validated. We do have a comprehensive range of products for WB detection and you can check out our website bosterbio.com to find out more information about them.
We have seen staining in mouse teratocarcinoma. What should we do? Is anti-EGF antibody supposed to stain teratocarcinoma positively?
From literature teratocarcinoma does express EGF. From Uniprot.org, EGF is expressed in renal medulla, kidney, teratocarcinoma, colon, among other tissues. Regarding which tissues have EGF expression, here are a few articles citing expression in various tissues: Colon, Pubmed ID: 15489334 Kidney, Pubmed ID: 3491360 Teratocarcinoma, Pubmed ID: 14702039
