Biological background

Protein function (datasheet): Receptor for somatostatin with higher affinity for somatostatin-14 than -28. This receptor is coupled via pertussis toxin sensitive G proteins to inhibition of adenylyl cyclase. In addition it stimulates phosphotyrosine phosphatase and Na (+)/H (+) exchanger via pertussis toxin insensitive G proteins.

Scientific background (datasheet): SSTR1 (Somatostatin receptor type 1) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the SSTR1 gene. The SSTR1 gene is mapped to chromosome 14. Somatostatin acts at many sites to inhibit the release of many hormones and other secretory proteins. The biological effects of somatostatin are probably mediated by a family of G protein-coupled receptors that are expressed in a tissue-specific manner. The encoded protein is a member of the superfamily of somatostatin receptors having seven transmembrane segments, and is expressed in highest levels in jejunum and stomach.

Cellular localization (datasheet): Cell membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein.

Tissue details (datasheet): Fetal kidney, fetal liver, and adult pancreas, brain, lung, jejunum and stomach.

Sequence similarities (datasheet): Belongs to the transcription factor STAT family.

Research relevance and current trends

  • Commonly studied in contexts related to More Gpcr,Neurology Process,Neuropeptides,Neuroscience,Neurotransmission,Neurotransmitter,Receptors / Channels.
  • Supports comparative expression analysis across conditions, genotypes, or treatments when paired with appropriate controls.
  • Useful for confirming target presence and subcellular distribution using orthogonal readouts (e.g., microscopy vs. immunoblotting).

Common research applications

  • Western blot (WB): Compare relative target abundance and apparent size/isoforms across samples; interpret bands in light of expected MW and potential PTMs.
  • ELISA: Measure target abundance in compatible matrices using a standard-curve readout; ensure dilution linearity and appropriate controls.
  • Immunohistochemistry (IHC): Assess tissue distribution and cell-type patterns; interpret staining with appropriate negative controls and antigen context.
  • Flow cytometry: Quantify target-positive populations in single-cell suspensions; pair with viability and isotype/FMO controls conceptually.

Notes for experimental interpretation

  • Consider isoforms, post-translational modifications, and processing that can shift apparent molecular weight or localization.
  • Cross-reactivity (datasheet): No cross-reactivity with other proteins
  • Use appropriate positive and negative controls (e.g., KO/KD, blocking peptide, or isotype controls) to support specificity interpretation.

As a polyclonal antibody, this reagent may recognize multiple epitopes on the target, which can improve detection robustness but may require careful specificity controls.
