Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) is a betacoronavirus first identified in Saudi Arabia in 2012. With a case fatality rate of approximately 35%, MERS-CoV remains a significant public health concern and a pandemic threat. MERS-CoV uses dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4/CD26) as its receptor, and the spike protein mediates viral entry. Safety & Handling
Ha-MERS-CoV uses the same hybrid alpha-pseudovirus platform as Ha-CoV-2, but presents the MERS-CoV spike protein and is assembled with all four MERS-CoV structural proteins (S, M, N, E). It targets DPP4/CD26 rather than ACE2 as the entry receptor.
BSL-2 containment is required. Ha-MERS-CoV VLPs are single-cycle particles that cannot produce infectious MERS-CoV. Standard BSL-2 precautions apply.
Firefly luciferase is recommended for HTS and dose-response neutralization assays. GFP or RFP are suitable for imaging-based or flow cytometry-based entry studies.
