AAV2 is the historical benchmark serotype, binding heparan sulfate proteoglycan for cell entry. It is the classic choice for retinal delivery (subretinal or intravitreal) and local CNS injection, and remains the reference against which newer serotypes are compared — though it carries the highest human seroprevalence.
