Detergent micelles solubilize a membrane protein by replacing the lipid bilayer with a shell of detergent molecules, keeping the target soluble and purifiable. It is the most widely used and best-established membrane-protein format. This collection lists recombinant membrane proteins supplied in detergent.

How to read this: detergent micelles are the default for a reason — the widest selection, mature purification, and the format behind most X-ray and LCP structures. The trade-off is fidelity: stripped of their lipids, some GPCRs and transporters lose stability or shift conformation. If preserving function is critical, step up to the nanodisc format; if you need multivalent native display for immunization, use VLPs. Look for the Active grade where validated function matters.
