Compound Overview
11-cis-Retinal (11-cis Retinaldehyde; 11-cis Vitamin A aldehyde), the oxidized form of 11-cis-Retinol, is a naturally occurring visual component. It binds opsin in the mammalian visual system as an inverse agonist, forming the inactive conformation of rhodopsin, and it has a role in vision, growth, and development. It can restore visual function in moths with visual impairments and can restore retinal function in an early-age LCA2 retinal degeneration 12 mouse model[1][2][3]. It is supplied as a yellow to brown liquid (C20H28O, MW 284.44).

Safety
For Research Use Only. Not for use in diagnostic or therapeutic procedures, and not for human or veterinary use. Handle in accordance with the Safety Data Sheet and your institution's chemical hygiene plan.
In Vivo
In a moth model of carotenoid deficiency-induced low visual sensitivity, visual function is restored by 11-cis-Retinal (applied by painting onto the corneal surfaces of the compound eyes, or onto the head capsule between the eyes)[2]. In an early-age LCA2 retinal degeneration 12 mouse model, 11-cis-Retinal (i.p., from postnatal day 14 to 21) restores retinal function[3].
