Vendor description (summary): Boster Bio Anti-MAL Antibody Picoband® catalog # A06941-1.

Biological background

Biological context: Plays an important role in signaling via the cell surface receptor PLXND1. Mediates reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton, leading to the retraction of cell projections. Promotes focal adhesion disassembly and inhibits adhesion of endothelial cells to the extracellular matrix. Regulates angiogenesis, both during embryogenesis and after birth. Can down-regulate sprouting angiogenesis. Required for normal vascular patterning during embryogenesis. Plays an important role in ensuring the specificity of synapse formation.

Expression and localization notes: cellular localization: Secreted., tissue context: Detected in the sinusoidal epithelium in the red pulp of spleen. Predominantly expressed in spleen. Also detected in a range of other tissues including heart, brain, lung, liver, kidney, thymus, testis, ovary, small intestine, prostate and colon..

Common research applications

  • Western blotting (WB): Compare MAL levels across samples and conditions using appropriate loading and biological controls.
  • Immunohistochemistry (IHC): Evaluate spatial distribution of MAL in tissue sections, considering fixation and antigen retrieval effects.
  • Flow cytometry: Quantify MAL-positive populations in single-cell suspensions with appropriate gating and controls.
  • ELISA: Use antibody-based detection formats to assess antigen presence or binding in plate-based assays.

Notes for experimental interpretation

  • Account for isoforms, post-translational modifications, and sample-specific processing that can shift apparent molecular weight or epitope accessibility.
  • Use positive/negative biological controls where possible (e.g., known-expressing cells/tissues, knockdown/knockout models) and include appropriate secondary-only/isotype controls for imaging workflows.

Additional product notes (from provided fields)

  • Background: Myelin and lymphocyte protein is a protein that in humans is encoded by the MAL gene. The protein encoded by this gene is a highly hydrophobic integral membrane protein belonging to the MAL family of proteolipids. The protein has been localized to the endoplasmic reticulum of T-cells and is a candidate linker protein in T-cell signal transduction. In addition, this proteolipid is localized in compact myelin of cells in the nervous system and has been implicated in myelin biogenesis and/or function. The protein plays a role in the formation, stabilization and maintenance of glycosphingolipid-enriched membrane microdomains. Down-regulation of this gene has been associated with a variety of human epithelial malignancies. Alternative splicing produces four transcript variants which vary from each other by the presence or absence of alternatively spliced exons 2 and 3.
  • Cross reactivity: No cross-reactivity with other proteins.
  • Cellular localization: Secreted.
  • Tissue details: Detected in the sinusoidal epithelium in the red pulp of spleen. Predominantly expressed in spleen. Also detected in a range of other tissues including heart, brain, lung, liver, kidney, thymus, testis, ovary, small intestine, prostate and colon.
