Katanin p60 (KATNA1) is the ATPase subunit of katanin, an AAA family enzyme that uses ATP to cut microtubules. Severing helps reorganize microtubule arrays, releases microtubules from centrosomes and spindle poles, and supports chromosome movement during cell division. In neurons, it helps generate short microtubules that can be transported into growing axons, so it is studied in mitosis and neuronal development.
