Product Overview
Anti-SVA VP1 Polyclonal Antibody is an affinity-purified rabbit polyclonal antibody raised against capsid protein VP1 of Senecavirus A (SVA), genome polyprotein residues Ser674–Gln937. It is supplied unconjugated in liquid form and is validated by the manufacturer for ELISA, immunohistochemistry and Western blot.
Senecavirus A, also known as Seneca Valley virus, is a small non-enveloped picornavirus with a single-stranded, positive-sense RNA genome. In pigs it causes vesicular lesions on the snout and feet that cannot be told apart clinically from foot-and-mouth disease and other vesicular diseases, so laboratory testing is needed to identify the cause; it has also been linked to increased deaths in newborn piglets. A cell-culture isolate of the virus, SVV-001, has been studied as an oncolytic agent in neuroendocrine tumours. The viral genome is translated as one polyprotein that is cut into structural and non-structural proteins. VP1 is one of the three major capsid proteins, together with VP2 and VP3, and in the capsid it sits around the fivefold symmetry axes. Antibodies to VP1 are used to detect SVA antigen in infected cells and tissues, in diagnostic and serological assay development, and in studies of the virus capsid.
Validated Applications
| Application | Recommended dilution |
|---|---|
| ELISA | 1:5,000 – 1:20,000 |
| Immunohistochemistry (IHC) | 1:50 – 1:500 |
| Western blot (WB) | 1:500 – 1:2,000 |
Dilutions are manufacturer starting points. Titrate for each sample type, fixation method and detection system. The manufacturer does not state whether IHC was performed on paraffin-embedded or frozen sections.

Immunogen & Antigen
The antibody was raised against an E. coli-derived recombinant fragment of the SVA genome polyprotein spanning Ser674–Gln937, then purified on an antigen affinity column. In the UniProt reference entry Q155Z9 (genome polyprotein of the prototype isolate SVV-001, United States, 2002), capsid protein VP1 occupies residues 674–937, between VP3 (435–673) and protein 2A (938–946). The immunogen therefore matches the complete VP1 chain and contains no sequence from the neighbouring proteins.
The immunogen is free recombinant VP1 rather than assembled virus. The polyclonal pool may therefore include antibodies to regions of VP1 that are buried in the intact capsid, and binding to epitopes that exist only in assembled particles is not characterised by the manufacturer.
Reactivity Notes
Manufacturer-stated reactivity is Senecavirus A. The reference sequence comes from the prototype isolate, and VP1 sequences differ to some extent between SVA isolates; reactivity with individual field isolates is not characterised. Reactivity with other picornaviruses, including the agents of other vesicular diseases of pigs, is also not characterised by the manufacturer. Do not assume cross-reactivity or its absence: confirm in-house before using this antibody to tell SVA apart from other viruses. The manufacturer also offers rabbit polyclonal antibodies to SVA VP2 and VP3.
Include an uninfected control when staining infected cells or tissue.
Safety & Handling
The formulation contains 0.05% ProClin 300 as a preservative — handle with gloves, avoid skin and eye contact, and consult the linked SDS. The 50% glycerol content keeps the product liquid at -20 °C, so working aliquots can be drawn without thawing; for -80 °C storage, aliquot first and avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
