Compound Overview
Argininosuccinic acid disodium is an intermediate metabolite of the urea cycle, and its levels are linked to argininosuccinic aciduria. It can induce oxidative stress, causing lipid and protein oxidation, glutathione depletion, and reduced antioxidant enzyme activity, and it can be converted to guanidinosuccinic acid, a nitric oxide mimic, through the action of nitric oxide-derived free radicals. It can be used in research on metabolic diseases, renal failure, and nervous system diseases, among others[1][2][3]. It is supplied as a white to off-white solid (C10H16N4Na2O6, MW 334.24) at 96.93% purity.

Safety
For Research Use Only. Not for use in diagnostic or therapeutic procedures, and not for human or veterinary use. Handle in accordance with the Safety Data Sheet and your institution's chemical hygiene plan.
In Vitro
| Solvent | Solubility | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| H2O | 50 mg/mL (149.59 mM) | requires sonication |
Aliquot the stock solution and store it at -80°C (up to 6 months) or -20°C (up to 1 month); sealed storage, away from moisture; avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
If water is used as the stock solvent, dilute to the working solution and sterilize it through a 0.22 μm filter before use.
Data provided by the manufacturer.
In Vitro
In the cerebral cortex and striatum of rats in vitro, Argininosuccinic acid disodium (250-1000 μM; 1 h) can lower reduced glutathione (GSH) concentration and sulfhydryl content, raise malondialdehyde levels and carbonyl formation, induce protein oxidative damage, and promote ROS production[1].
In Vivo
In 30-day-old rats, Argininosuccinic acid disodium (2 μM in 2 μL; intrastriatal administration; single dose) induces significant oxidative stress[1].
| Animal Model | 30-day-old male Wistar rats[1] |
|---|---|
| Dosage | 2 μL of a 1.0 M concentration (2 μM in 2 μL) |
| Administration | Intrastriatal administration; single dose |
| Result | Significantly induced lipid oxidation (MDA levels) and protein oxidation (carbonyl formation), increased ROS and RNS generation (DCFH oxidation). Significantly decreased GSH concentrations. |
