Compound Overview
Benzoic acid lithium is an aromatic alcohol that occurs widely in plants and serves as a common additive in food, beverages, cosmetics and other products. It inhibits bacteria and fungi and functions as a preservative[1]. It is supplied as a white to off-white solid (C7H5LiO2, MW 128.06) at 99.73% purity.

Safety
For Research Use Only. Not for use in diagnostic or therapeutic procedures, and not for human or veterinary use. Handle in accordance with the Safety Data Sheet and your institution's chemical hygiene plan.
In Vitro
| Solvent | Solubility | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| H2O | 100 mg/mL (780.88 mM) | requires sonication |
Aliquot the stock solution and store it at -80°C (up to 6 months) or -20°C (up to 1 month); sealed storage, away from moisture; avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
If water is used as the stock solvent, dilute to the working solution and sterilize it through a 0.22 μm filter before use.
Data provided by the manufacturer.
In Vitro
Benzoic acid (1 mM) lithium promotes OAT2-catalyzed efflux of glutamic acid and orotic acid from 293 cells expressing OAT2h. Antibacterial activity against S. aureus, S. epidermidis, P. aeruginosa, and B. cereus is shown by Benzoic acid (0.5 and 2.0 mg/disc) lithium.
In Vivo
In weaned pigs, a combination of benzoic acid lithium (2,000 mg/kg in diet, 1-14 days) combined with Thymol (100 mg/kg in diet, 1-14 days) improve growth performance, promote nutrient digestion and absorption, and reduce diarrhea.
