Brefeldin A is a fungal metabolite that inhibits protein transport from the endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi apparatus by targeting GTP-exchange factors for Arf1. In neuroscience, it is used to study protein trafficking and ER stress, both of which are implicated in neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS and Parkinson’s disease. Its reversible inhibition allows for controlled investigation of intracellular transport mechanisms.

Classification: Harmful. May be harmful if inhaled, swallowed or absorbed through skin.

Safety Phrases:

  • S22 - Do not breathe dust
  • S24/25 - Avoid contact with skin and eyes
  • S36/37/39 - Wear suitable protective clothing, gloves and eye/face protection

Risk Phrases:

R68- Possible risk of irreversible effects

Hazard Phrases:

H301

Precautionary Phrases:
