FK-866 HCl is a potent inhibitor of nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (NAMPT), an enzyme involved in NAD⁺ biosynthesis. In neuroscience, FK-866 is used to study the role of NAD⁺ metabolism in neuronal survival, energy homeostasis, and neuroinflammation. NAD⁺ depletion induced by FK-866 leads to mitochondrial dysfunction and cell death, providing a model for investigating neurodegenerative mechanisms. Its application extends to exploring therapeutic strategies that target metabolic resilience and oxidative stress in neurodegenerative diseases.
