Target GABAA Receptor Beta 3

The GABA-A receptor beta 3 subunit (GABRB3) is a vital component of the GABA-A receptor complex, the primary class of fast-acting ligand-gated ion channels responsible for inhibitory neurotransmission in the brain. These receptors are essential for maintaining the balance between neuronal excitation and inhibition, a process critical for normal brain function and network stability.

GABRB3 is widely expressed in the central nervous system and plays a key role in shaping synaptic and extrasynaptic inhibitory currents. Genetic and functional alterations in GABRB3 have been linked to a range of neurological and neurodevelopmental disorders, including epilepsy, autism spectrum disorders, and Angelman syndrome. More recently, GABRB3 has emerged as a candidate of interest in neurodegenerative disease research, where disrupted GABAergic signaling contributes to cognitive decline, synaptic dysfunction, and neuronal vulnerability.

In conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, reduced GABRB3 expression may impair inhibitory tone, leading to network hyperexcitability and excitotoxicity—hallmarks of disease progression. As a result, GABRB3 is being explored as both a biomarker and a therapeutic target for restoring inhibitory balance and protecting against neurodegeneration.

Understanding the role of GABRB3 in inhibitory signaling pathways offers valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases and supports the development of targeted interventions aimed at preserving cognitive function.

1 µg/ml of SMC-339 was sufficient for detection of Beta 3 GABA receptor in 10 µg of rat brain lysate by colorimetric immunoblot analysis using goat anti-mouse IgG:HRP as the secondary antibody.
