Compound Overview
Hydroprene is a synthetic juvenile hormone analog that mimics the insect juvenile hormone, interfering with normal growth, development and reproduction in insects. It inhibits metamorphosis, disrupts reproduction and directly affects embryos, acting on the immature stages of insects, and can be used in control studies of Plodia interpunctella eggs and Blattella germanica[1]. It has the molecular formula C17H30O2 and a molecular weight of 266.42 g/mol.

In Vivo
In Indianmeal moth eggs, Hydroprene lengthens developmental time and raises mortality, with effects that increase with exposure period and with temperature above 16°C[1]. In last-instar German cockroaches, Hydroprene (0.1-100.0 μg/μL; topical; single dose) causes sterilization in a dose-dependent manner; SD50 = 39.82 μg/g for males and SD50 = 86.64 μg/g for females, so males are more sensitive, and at the highest tested dose, adult longevity is reduced and supernumerary molting is induced[2].

| Result | Caused 3.5% infertility and produced 33.60 progeny per ovarian cycle in females at 0.1 μg/μL. Caused 10.7% infertility and produced 29.32 progeny per ovarian cycle in females at 1.0 μg/μL. Caused 96.2% infertility and produced 0.80 progeny per ovarian cycle in females at 10.0 μg/μL. Caused 100% infertility and produced 0 progeny per ovarian cycle in females at 100.0 μg/μL. Caused 20.0% infertility and produced 27.84 progeny per ovarian cycle in crosses with males treated at 0.1 μg/μL. Caused 55.1% infertility and produced 12.10 progeny per ovarian cycle in crosses with males treated at 1.0 μg/μL. Caused 100% infertility and produced 0 progeny per ovarian cycle in crosses with males treated at 10.0 μg/μL or 100.0 μg/μL. Achieved a sterilization dose 50% (SD50) of 86.64 μg/g body weight for females and 39.82 μg/g body weight for males. Induced twisted wings in 100% of females and males treated at 10.0 μg/μL or 100.0 μg/μL, with 96.2-100% of twisted-wing females and 100% of twisted-wing males sterile. Induced twisted wings in 64.2% of females and 51.7% of males treated at 1.0 μg/μL, with 16.6% of twisted-wing females and 80.0% of twisted-wing males sterile. Reduced adult lifespans of females to 96.57 days and males to 46.33 days at 100.0 μg/μL. Induced supernumerary sixth molt in some individuals treated at 100.0 μg/μL, with death occurring 1-2 days after partial abdominal cuticle shedding. |
