Scientific Background

Influenza A subtype H7 (H7Nx) has caused sporadic human infections with high morbidity, most notably H7N9 outbreaks in China beginning in 2013. H7 hemagglutinin (HA) can bind both α2-3-linked (avian-type) and α2-6-linked (human-type) sialic acid receptors in some strains, raising concern about pandemic potential. H7 pseudovirus tools enable safe evaluation of H7-specific neutralizing antibodies and vaccine candidates without live H7 virus containment requirements.

How does H7 differ from H5 for pseudovirus applications?

H5 and H7 are distinct hemagglutinin subtypes with different receptor binding specificities and antigenicity. Antibodies against H5 do not generally cross-neutralize H7 — subtype-specific pseudoviruses are required for accurate evaluation of subtype-specific antibodies and vaccines.
