Compound Overview
Merepoxine is a jacobin-like pyrrolizidine alkaloid and epoxide formed from melensine under alkaline conditions, through an SN2 reaction accompanied by elimination of hydrogen chloride in a chlorohydrin-like reaction that yields the epoxide[1][2][3].
It has the molecular formula C18H25NO6 and a molecular weight of 351.39 g/mol.

In Vitro
Merepoxine and Merepoxine N-oxide belong to the senecionine-type pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs)[1]. Merepoxine (0.6 ng per leaf; left to stand for 2 h after spraying) can be removed efficiently from the leaf surface of Jacobaea vulgaris by soaking alone for 20 s, either in aqueous solution or in weakly acidic aqueous solution, giving a recovery rate above 95% in the first extraction[1].
