Compound Overview
Nannochelin C is a citrate-hydroxamate siderophore and iron chelator found in Nannocystis exedens strain Na e485. It has an MIC of 0.39 μg/mL against Brevibacterium ammoniagenes and shows weak growth-inhibitory activity against some Gram-positive bacteria, an antimicrobial effect that may be linked to its metal-chelating activity; it can be used in studies of siderophores, microbial iron metabolism and antimicrobial activity[1]. It has the molecular formula C36H44N4O13 and a molecular weight of 740.75 g/mol.

In Vitro
In the agar diffusion assay, Nannochelin C (40 μg/disc) shows weak antibacterial activity against some Gram-positive bacteria, with inhibition zone diameters of 15 mm against Bacillus megaterium and 22 mm against Brevibacterium ammoniagenes[1]. Growth of Brevibacterium ammoniagenes is inhibited by Nannochelin C with an MIC of 0.39 μg/mL[1]. At 40 μg/disc, Nannochelin C gives incomplete inhibition, with zone diameters of 14, 16, and 15 mm, respectively, against Micrococcus luteus, Staphylococcus aureus, and Rhizopus arrhizus, but no detectable growth inhibition of Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, or Candida albicans[1].
