Nigericin is a potassium and sodium ionophore that disrupts mitochondrial membrane potential and stimulates calcium release from mitochondrial stores. In neuroscience, it is used to study mitochondrial dysfunction, a hallmark of many neurodegenerative diseases. By altering ion gradients, nigericin helps elucidate the role of mitochondrial signaling and bioenergetics in neuronal health and disease.
