Oleamide is an endogenous fatty acid amide originally identified in the cerebrospinal fluid of sleep-deprived animals. It acts as a neuromodulator with agonist activity at cannabinoid CB1 receptors and also activates PPARγ. Oleamide exhibits neuroprotective properties, including anti-inflammatory and vasodilatory effects. It has been shown to attenuate neuronal damage and systemic inflammation in various disease models. Its multifaceted actions on neurotransmission, inflammation, and vascular tone make it a compound of interest in neuroscience, particularly in the context of sleep regulation, neuroinflammation, and neurodegeneration.
