Compound Overview
Osbond acid, also known as all-cis-4,7,10,13,16-Docosapentaenoic acid or Austrian acid, is an isomer of docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), a 22-carbon fatty acid found in fish oil that makes up a minor fraction (0.1% to 1%) of total serum unsaturated fatty acids in humans and increases with dietary supplementation. It is an omega-6 fatty acid formed by extension and desaturation of arachidonic acid, and its levels may fall during fatty acid desaturase syndrome, which may affect development. Increased hepatic expression of very long-chain fatty acid protein 6 and elevated levels of very long-chain fatty acids, including this compound, are features of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, a precancerous condition associated with hepatocellular carcinoma. It is supplied as a colorless to light yellow liquid (C22H34O2, MW 330.50) at 98.96% purity.
Note on reported activity. The activity described on this page is reported for DPA, not for this compound. No activity data for this stereoisomer are provided by the manufacturer.
