Compound Overview
Ostruthin, also known as ostruthine, is a natural coumarin with antibacterial and antimycobacterial activity that inhibits the growth of mycobacteria and Staphylococcus aureus. It also suppresses proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells and de novo cellular DNA synthesis, and has been applied in research on mycobacterial infections and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease[1][2][3]. It is supplied as a white to off-white solid (C19H22O3, MW 298.38) at 98.84% purity.

In Vitro
Ostruthin (72-120 h) potently inhibits proliferation of various rapidly growing mycobacterial strains in vitro, with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 3.4 to 107.4 μM against Mycobacterium abscesus, M. aurum, M. fortuitum, M. phlei and M. smegmatis[1]. Ostruthine (1×10-4-1×10-3 M) potently inhibits growth and cellular oxygen consumption of Staphylococcus aureus strain BS 270[2]. In rat aortic vascular smooth muscle cells, Ostruthin (30 μM; 48 h) potently inhibits proliferation induced by 10% serum, with an IC50 of 11 μM[3]. In rat aortic vascular smooth muscle cells, Ostruthin (1-30 μM; 20 h) concentration-dependently inhibits 10% serum-induced de novo DNA synthesis, with an IC50 of 17 μM[3].
