Compound Overview

Pentagastrin meglumine, also known as ICI-50123 meglumine, is a potent, selective agonist of the cholecystokinin B (CCKB) receptor, with an EC50 value of 11 nM. It enhances gastric mucosal defense mechanisms against acid and protects the gastric mucosa from experimental injury[1][2]. It has the molecular formula C44H66N8O14S (MW 963.11).

In Vitro

Pentagastrin meglumine (0.1-100 μM; GH3-cells) raises intracellular Ca2+ in a dose-dependent manner, up to a maximal 2.77-fold increase[1]. Pentagastrin meglumine (0.1-100 μM; GH3-cells) binds to GH3 cells in a dose-dependent manner[1].

In Vivo

Pentagastrin meglumine (80 μg/kg/h; intravenous infusion) protects the rat gastric mucosa against acidified aspirin injury[2].

Animal ModelMale Sprague-Dawley rats[2]
Dosage80 μg/kg/h
AdministrationIntravenous injection
ResultProtected rat gastric mucosa from acidified aspirin injury. Induced a hyperaemic response to luminal acid challenge, increased mucus gel thickness, and elevated pHi during acid challenge.
