Compound Overview

Pulcherriminic acid is a cyclic dipeptide that acts as an antimicrobial agent with high affinity for Fe3+, occurring mainly in Bacillus species and yeast. Through a non-enzymatic reaction, it chelates iron ions to form the extracellular red pigment pulcherrimin, which competes for iron and thereby produces an antibacterial effect. It has applications across the food, agriculture, and medical industries[1][2]. It is supplied as a light yellow to yellow solid (C12H20N2O4, MW 256.30) at 98.0% purity.

Safety

For Research Use Only. Not for use in diagnostic or therapeutic procedures, and not for human or veterinary use. Handle in accordance with the Safety Data Sheet and your institution's chemical hygiene plan.

In Vitro

SolventSolubilityNotes
DMSO2 mg/mL (7.80 mM)requires sonication and warming and heat to 60°C; use freshly opened DMSO (absorbed moisture lowers solubility)

Aliquot the stock solution and store it at -80°C (up to 6 months) or -20°C (up to 1 month); avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles.

Data provided by the manufacturer.

In Vitro

Pulcherriminic acid can block formation of Bacillus subtilis biofilm[2]. In the presence of Fe3+, Pulcherriminic acid can form the insoluble red pigment pulcherrimin, which competes for iron nutrients and thereby inhibits growth of Metschnikowia yeasts[3].

Data provided by the manufacturer. Numbered citations refer to the Literature Cited list in the product description.
