Product Overview
Recombinant Human BMP-2 Protein is a full-length, non-glycosylated homodimer expressed in human cells. It is made in an animal-free, xeno-free and tag-free format and supplied lyophilized without carrier protein, at >95% purity by SDS-PAGE and extremely low endotoxin (<0.5 EU/µg).
BMP-2 is a strong inducer of bone and cartilage formation. Researchers use it to drive mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) differentiation toward bone and cartilage, in tissue-engineering and biomaterial studies, in bone-repair research models and in work on bone disease mechanisms. Activity is confirmed by induction of alkaline phosphatase in ATDC-5 cells.
Expression system: Human cells · Tag-free · Animal-free
Scientific Background
Bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) belongs to the transforming growth factor β family, which includes more than 20 structurally related bone growth factors. Expression is highest in lung, spleen and colon; lower but significant levels occur in many other tissues, among them heart, brain, liver and kidney. Its main known role is the induction of bone and cartilage formation.
Mature human BMP-2 is usually a homodimer of two 114-amino-acid monomers. The two chains are joined by a disulfide bridge, and each monomer carries three intrachain disulfide bridges arranged in a cystine-knot motif.
Research Applications
BMP-2 is used across bone and cartilage research, from stem-cell differentiation to biomaterial studies.
- Bone and cartilage formation: induction of osteogenic and chondrogenic programs in tissue-engineering and regenerative-biology research.
- Stem cell differentiation: driving mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) toward bone and cartilage lineages.
- Bone repair models: research on bone healing and fracture repair.
- Tissue engineering: incorporation into biomaterials to build experimental bone and cartilage grafts.
- Disease and target research: a tool for studying bone diseases and exploring potential therapeutic targets.
- Basic research: mechanisms of bone and cartilage development and regeneration.

Biological Activity & Quality Control
Biological activity is measured by the ability of BMP-2 to induce alkaline phosphatase production in the ATDC-5 mouse chondrogenic cell line.
Lot-specific activity and purity data are provided on the Certificate of Analysis (CoA), available from BioHippo on request.
Reconstitution
- Briefly centrifuge the vial before opening.
