Product Overview
Recombinant Human BMP-7 Protein (osteogenic protein 1, OP1) is a tag-free, full-length human BMP-7 expressed in human cells and supplied as a non-glycosylated homodimer. It is made in an animal-free, xeno-free format and lyophilized from a 0.2 µm-filtered PBS solution without carrier protein, with purity >95% by SDS-PAGE and endotoxin <0.5 EU/µg.
BMP-7 is used to study bone and cartilage formation, including differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) toward bone and cartilage, fracture-repair and tissue-engineering models, kidney development and bone disease. Its activity is confirmed by induction of alkaline phosphatase in the mouse chondrogenic cell line ATDC-5.

Scientific Background
BMP-7, also called osteogenic protein 1 (OP1), belongs to the transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) family, a group of more than 20 structurally related bone growth factors. It has an important role in cartilage and bone formation and also contributes to calcium regulation and kidney development.
Mature human BMP-7 is usually a homodimer of two antiparallel monomers of 139 amino acids. The monomers are linked by a disulfide bridge, and each one carries three intrachain disulfide bridges arranged in a cysteine-knot motif.
Research Applications
Recombinant human BMP-7 is a research tool for bone, cartilage and stem-cell biology.
- Bone and cartilage formation studies, including tissue-engineering and regenerative-medicine models.
- Differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) toward bone and cartilage.
- Fracture-repair and bone-healing models.
- Kidney development and function research.
- Incorporation into biomaterials to build bone and cartilage grafts for research.
- Studies of bone disease mechanisms and drug-target discovery.

Biological Activity & Quality Control
Biological activity is measured by the ability of the protein to induce alkaline phosphatase production in ATDC-5 cells, a mouse chondrogenic cell line.
Lot-specific activity and purity data are provided on the Certificate of Analysis (CoA), available from BioHippo on request.
Reconstitution
- Briefly centrifuge the vial before opening.
- Reconstitute in sterile 4 mM HCl containing at least 0.1% human or bovine serum albumin.
- Avoid repeated freeze–thaw cycles; a manual defrost freezer is recommended for storage.
