Product Overview
Recombinant Human IL-23 Protein is a tag-free, glycosylated heterodimer expressed in human cells. It is made in an animal-free, xeno-free format and supplied lyophilized from a 0.2 µm-filtered PBS solution without carrier protein, with purity >95% by SDS-PAGE and endotoxin <0.5 EU/µg.
IL-23 is used in immunology research on the regulation of immune responses, particularly T-cell differentiation and activation, in research on autoimmune diseases such as psoriasis and inflammatory bowel disease, and in studies of its influence on tumor growth and metastasis. It is also used in drug-discovery research on autoimmune disease. The manufacturer expresses this human protein in human cells, with extremely low endotoxin and high purity.

Scientific Background
IL-23 is a heterodimeric cytokine made of a unique p19 subunit and a p40 subunit that it shares with IL-12. It is secreted by activated dendritic cells and macrophages.
IL-23 binds a heterodimeric receptor complex of IL12RB1 and IL23R and activates the JAK-STAT signaling cascade. It acts mainly on memory T cells rather than naive T cells and increases production of proinflammatory cytokines such as IFNγ and IL-17. Through these effects IL-23 drives autoimmune inflammation, may contribute to autoimmune inflammatory diseases and may be important in tumorigenesis.
Research Applications
IL-23 is used mainly in immunology and autoimmune-disease research; the main research areas are listed below.
- Immunology research: regulation of immune responses, particularly T-cell differentiation and activation.
- Autoimmune disease research: the role of IL-23 in psoriasis and inflammatory bowel disease.
- Cancer research: influence of IL-23 on tumor growth and metastasis.
- Drug discovery: IL-23 as a target in autoimmune disease research.
- Basic research: mechanisms of immune response, inflammation and autoimmunity.

Biological Activity & Quality Control
Biological activity is measured by the ability of the protein to induce IL-17 expression in murine splenocytes.
Lot-specific activity and purity data are provided on the Certificate of Analysis (CoA), available from BioHippo on request.
Reconstitution
- Briefly centrifuge the vial before opening.
- Reconstitute in sterile PBS containing 0.1% endotoxin-free recombinant human serum albumin.
- Store the reconstituted protein under sterile conditions at 2°C to 8°C for up to 1 month, or at −20°C to −80°C for up to 3 months.
- Avoid repeated freeze–thaw cycles; a manual-defrost freezer is recommended.
Storage & Shipping
| Storage | As supplied: −20°C to −80°C for up to 12 months from receipt. After reconstitution: 2°C to 8°C for up to 1 month, or −20°C to −80°C for up to 3 months, under sterile conditions. Avoid repeated freeze–thaw cycles. |
