Product Overview
Recombinant Human IL-29 Protein is a tag-free, non-glycosylated homodimer expressed in human cells. It is made in an animal-free, xeno-free format and supplied lyophilized from a 0.2 µm-filtered PBS solution without carrier protein, with purity >95% by SDS-PAGE and endotoxin <0.5 EU/µg.
IL-29 (IFN-λ1) is a strong antiviral cytokine used to study antiviral immunity and immune regulation, including antiviral studies with hepatitis viruses such as hepatitis C virus (HCV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV), immune modulation and antitumor activity research. The manufacturer expresses this human protein in human cells, with extremely low endotoxin and high purity.

Scientific Background
IL-29 belongs to the type III interferon family, which is distinct from the type I IFNs. Its expression is induced by viral infection or double-stranded RNA.
IL-29 is a ligand for the heterodimeric class II cytokine receptor formed by IL10RB and IFNLR1. Receptor engagement activates JAK/STAT signaling and the expression of IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs), which establish the antiviral state. IL-29 has antiviral, antitumour and immunomodulatory activities.
IL-29 acts mainly on epithelial cells, because its receptor subunit IFNLR1 is expressed specifically on that cell type. It also has an immunomodulatory effect through up-regulation of MHC class I antigen expression.
Research Applications
IL-29 is used mainly in antiviral-immunity and immune-regulation research; the main research areas are listed below.
- Antiviral activity: inhibition of virus replication in studies with hepatitis C virus (HCV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV).
- Immunomodulation: modulation of the immune response, with possible relevance to autoimmune disease.
- Antitumor activity research: antitumor effects of type III interferons.
- Basic research: antiviral immunity and immune regulation.

Biological Activity & Quality Control
Biological activity is measured by the antiviral effect of the protein in A549 cells (a human lung adenocarcinoma epithelial cell line) infected with encephalomyocarditis (EMC) virus.
Lot-specific activity and purity data are provided on the Certificate of Analysis (CoA), available from BioHippo on request.
Reconstitution
- Briefly centrifuge the vial before opening.
- Reconstitute in sterile PBS containing 0.1% endotoxin-free recombinant human serum albumin.
- Store the reconstituted protein under sterile conditions at 2°C to 8°C for up to 1 month, or at −20°C to −80°C for up to 3 months.
- Avoid repeated freeze–thaw cycles; a manual-defrost freezer is recommended.
Storage & Shipping
| Storage | As supplied: −20°C to −80°C for up to 12 months from receipt. After reconstitution: 2°C to 8°C for up to 1 month, or −20°C to −80°C for up to 3 months, under sterile conditions. Avoid repeated freeze–thaw cycles. |
