Product Overview
Recombinant Human IL-4 Protein is a tag-free, glycosylated monomer expressed in human cells. It is made in an animal-free, xeno-free format and supplied lyophilized from a 0.2 µm-filtered PBS solution without carrier protein, with purity >95% by SDS-PAGE and endotoxin <0.5 EU/µg.
IL-4 is a strong immunomodulatory cytokine used to study the shaping of immune responses, allergic inflammation and asthma, and autoimmune disease, where it can promote or suppress responses depending on context. It is also used in drug-discovery research on inflammatory and autoimmune disease. The manufacturer expresses this human protein in human cells, with extremely low endotoxin and high purity.
Expression system: Human cells · Tag-free · Animal-free
Scientific Background
Interleukin 4 (IL-4) is a 14–19 kDa glycosylated monomer of the IL-4 / IL-13 family. It is produced mainly by Th2-biased CD4+ T cells, mast cells, basophils and eosinophils.
IL-4 has many roles: it contributes to several steps of B-cell activation and also acts on other cell types. It co-stimulates DNA synthesis, induces class II MHC expression on resting B cells, increases both secretion and surface expression of IgE and IgG1, and regulates expression of the low-affinity IgE Fc receptor (CD23) on lymphocytes and monocytes.
Research Applications
IL-4 is used mainly in immunology, inflammation and allergy research; the main research areas are listed below.
- Immunomodulation: studies of how IL-4 shapes the immune response.
- Allergic inflammation: research on the development of allergic inflammation and asthma.
- Autoimmune disease: IL-4 can promote or suppress autoimmune responses depending on context.
- Drug discovery: IL-4 as a target in inflammatory and autoimmune disease research.

Biological Activity & Quality Control
Biological activity is measured by the ability of the protein to stimulate proliferation of human TF-1 cells, a human erythroleukemic indicator cell line.
Lot-specific activity and purity data are provided on the Certificate of Analysis (CoA), available from BioHippo on request.
Reconstitution
- Briefly centrifuge the vial before opening.
- Reconstitute in sterile PBS containing 0.1% endotoxin-free recombinant human serum albumin.
- Store the reconstituted protein under sterile conditions at 2°C to 8°C for up to 1 month, or at −20°C to −80°C for up to 3 months.
- Avoid repeated freeze–thaw cycles; a manual-defrost freezer is recommended.
Storage & Shipping
| Storage | As supplied: −20°C to −80°C for up to 12 months from receipt. After reconstitution: 2°C to 8°C for up to 1 month, or −20°C to −80°C for up to 3 months, under sterile conditions. Avoid repeated freeze–thaw cycles. |
