Product Overview
Recombinant Human VEGF-121 Protein is a tag-free, full-length human VEGF-121 expressed in human cells and supplied as a glycosylated homodimer. It is produced in an animal-free, xeno-free format and lyophilized from a 0.2 µm-filtered PBS solution without carrier protein, with purity >95% by SDS-PAGE and endotoxin <0.5 EU/µg.
VEGF-121 is a research tool for angiogenesis and vascular biology, including blood-vessel formation, wound-healing and tissue-engineering models that need a vascular network, and tumor angiogenesis in cancer research. Its activity is confirmed by stimulation of HUVEC proliferation.
Expression system: Human cells · Tag-free · Animal-free
Scientific Background
Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a potent growth and angiogenic cytokine of the PDGF family, defined by eight conserved cysteine residues and a cystine-knot structure. VEGF drives angiogenesis, vasculogenesis and endothelial cell growth: it induces endothelial cell proliferation, promotes migration, inhibits apoptosis and increases blood-vessel permeability.
Human cells express several alternatively spliced VEGF isoforms. VEGF-121 is the only isoform without the basic heparin-binding region, so it is freely diffusible. It also induces proliferation of lymphatic endothelial cells, and up-regulation of VEGF-121 may promote lymphangiogenesis.
Research Applications
Recombinant human VEGF-121 is used across angiogenesis, vascular-biology and cancer research.
- Angiogenesis studies of blood-vessel formation.
- Wound-healing models that depend on blood-vessel growth and tissue repair.
- Tissue-engineering work aimed at building a robust vascular network.
- Tumor-angiogenesis research in cancer biology.
- Drug-discovery studies related to ischemic disease and tissue regeneration.

Biological Activity & Quality Control
Biological activity is measured by the ability of the protein to stimulate proliferation of HUVECs (human umbilical vein endothelial cells).
Lot-specific activity and purity data are provided on the Certificate of Analysis (CoA), available from BioHippo on request.
Reconstitution
- Briefly centrifuge the vial before opening.
- Reconstitute in sterile PBS containing 0.1% endotoxin-free recombinant human serum albumin.
- Avoid repeated freeze–thaw cycles; a manual defrost freezer is recommended for storage.
