Compound Overview
Retinyl glucoside, also known as retinyl β-D-glucoside, is a lipid β-D-glucoside of retinol and serves as a substrate for broad-spectrum β-glucosidase. It can be hydrolyzed by guinea pig hepatocyte cytosolic and membrane-associated β-glucosidases, as well as by almond β-glucosidase, to release retinol and glucose, but it is not hydrolyzed by human placental glucocerebrosidase. It can be used in research on Gaucher's disease[1]. It is supplied as a yellow to brown solid (C26H40O6, MW 448.59).

In Vitro
In 0.1 M sodium acetate (pH 5.5), almond β-glucosidase can hydrolyze Retinyl glucoside (60 min), releasing retinol and glucose in nearly equimolar amounts, with a glucose/retinol molar ratio of 0.99[1]. Guinea pig hepatocellular cytosolic β-glucosidase and membrane-associated TX-100 β-glucosidase can also hydrolyze Retinyl glucoside (60 min) in 0.2 M Sodium Citrate (pH 6.0)[1]. Human placental glucocerebrosidase does not hydrolyze Retinyl glucoside (1 h) in 0.1 M sodium acetate (pH 5.5) containing TdC[1].
