SMER3 is a small-molecule modulator that selectively inhibits a yeast SCF (Skp1-Cullin-F-box) family E3 ubiquitin ligase. It induces the expression of MET genes and blocks cell proliferation, and has been identified as an enhancer of rapamycin. Although initially characterized in yeast, SMER3's modulation of ubiquitin ligase activity is of interest in neurodegenerative disease research, where dysregulated protein turnover and autophagy are central to pathogenesis. SMER3 may provide insights into E3 ligase function and its therapeutic modulation in neuronal systems.
