Sphingosine is a bioactive lipid and precursor to ceramide and sphingosine-1-phosphate, both of which are critical regulators of cell fate. In the nervous system, sphingosine modulates signaling pathways involved in neuroinflammation, apoptosis, and synaptic function. It selectively inhibits protein kinase C and calmodulin-dependent enzymes, influencing neurotransmission and neuronal survival. Alterations in sphingolipid metabolism are associated with neurodegenerative diseases such as multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's disease, making sphingosine a molecule of interest in neurobiology.

Classification: Harmful. May be harmful if inhaled, swallowed or absorbed through skin.

Safety Phrases:

  • S22 - Do not breathe dust
  • S24/25 - Avoid contact with skin and eyes
  • S36/37/39 - Wear suitable protective clothing, gloves and eye/face protection
