Product Overview
Styrene-maleic acid (SMA) copolymers are used for function and structure studies of membrane proteins. They extract membrane proteins from cell membranes and proteoliposomes without detergent and form bilayer nanodiscs with phospholipids, in which the extracted proteins are stabilized in a lipid environment that mimics the natural bilayer. Proteins in nanodiscs can be purified and used in biochemical, biophysical and biological experiments, for example structure studies by electron microscopy.
This copolymer has a styrene to maleic acid molar ratio of 2:1 and forms nanodiscs of about 30 nm. The ideal pH for nanodisc formation is pH 7.0–8.0.
