Compound Overview
Xanthobaccin A is a potent antibiotic that can be isolated from the culture fluid of Stenotrophomonas sp. strain SB-K88. It is active against fungi and Gram-positive bacteria, induces zoospore immobilization and lysis, and inhibits mycelial growth, and it can be used in research on beet damping-off disease and bacterial and fungal infection[1][2][3][4]. It has the molecular formula C29H38N2O6 and a molecular weight of 510.62 g/mol.

In Vitro
Motility of Aphanomyces cochlioides zoospores is potently inhibited, and lysis is induced, by Xanthobaccin A (0.001-10 μg/mL; 1-4 h) in a dose- and time-dependent manner, with an MIC of 0.01 μg/mL[1]. Mycelial growth is inhibited by Xanthobaccin A, which also induces abnormal morphological changes in Aphanomyces cochlioides hyphae[1]. Xanthobaccin A (0.1 μg/mL; 30 min) causes structural damage to Aphanomyces cochlioides zoospores and their lysis within 30 min[1]. The growth of several fungal plant pathogens (Phytophthora vignae f. sp. adzukicola, Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici, as well as Aphanomyces cochlioides and Pythium ultimum) is potently inhibited by Xanthobaccin A (20 μg per disk; 2-7 days)[2]. With a MIC of 1 μg/mL, Xanthobaccin A (1 μg/mL) inhibits growth of Pythium ultimum[3]. Growth of Bacillus subtilis is inhibited by Xanthobaccin A (20 μg; 24 h), with an MIC of 10 μg/mL[4]. As a ferric iron (Fe3+) metallophore, Xanthobaccin A is capable of chelating ferric iron ions[4].
