MurA (UDP-N-acetylglucosamine enolpyruvyl transferase) carries out the first committed step of peptidoglycan biosynthesis in bacteria. It moves enolpyruvate from phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) to UDP-N-acetylglucosamine, forming enolpyruvyl-UDP-N-acetylglucosamine and inorganic phosphate. MurA is essential and an attractive antibacterial drug target.
